LIV Golf: Timeline from big beginnings to liquidation

LIV Golf League appears to be over after five years after it was announced it will enter liquidation.

Its arrival earlier in the decade sparked division and debate in a fractured men's game, with players leaving the PGA Tour and DP World Tour to join the breakaway circuit.

A shock framework agreement between the PGA Tour, DP World Tour and Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) was unable to unify men's golf, with LIV Golf facing fresh challenges to retain its place in the sport, and on Thursday it was announced it will "wind down" ahead of 2027.

Rory McIlroy likened LIV Golf to a "soap opera" and said his relationship with some of his Ryder Cup team-mates who joined LIV had been damaged.

The PGA Tour filed a federal lawsuit against Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) and Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the governor of the PIF.

McIlroy called for Norman to leave the rebel league and Tiger Woods also encouraged Norman to go in order for a peace settlement to be negotiated.

Augusta National chairman Fred Ridley confirmed eligible LIV Golfers could play at The Masters. Jon Rahm said PGA Tour players should be 'thankful' for LIV.

Rahm withdrew his appeal against sanctions imposed by the DP World Tour for playing in conflicting LIV Golf events. His fines were believed to be around £2.2m ($3m). He said the tour's conditional release programme was "extorting players".

LIV Golf filed for bankruptcy protection in the United States but reiterated its intention to start a new version of the league, dubbed LIV 2.0, from 2027. Rahm and DeChambeau are listed as the players still owed the most.

A representative for Rahm told a bankruptcy hearing that the Spaniard did not intend to participate in LIV 2.0, with the 2023 Masters champion deeming the terms for the league's proposed relaunch to be "unacceptable".
